Ohio Wesleyan University students and faculty will have the opportunity to work on projects that promote environmental, social, and economic sustainability through the newly formed citizens group Sustainable Delaware.
OWU and Sustainable Delaware are co-sponsoring the Sustainability Film Series, which includes films and panel discussions that explore sustainable living. The first free public event will be held at 7 p.m. Febuary 16 in Room 163 of OWU’s Schimmel/Conrades Science Center, 90 S. Henry St.
Two short films from the “Story of Stuff” series will be shown. They explore issues related to materialism, consumerism, and wastefulness in the world.
Afterward, the panel discussion will include:
Tom Wolber, a member of Sustainable Delaware, the OWU Sustainability Task Force, and the Delaware Shade Tree Commission (and an associate professor of German in the Modern Foreign Languages Department). Veronica Malencia, a senior OWU student from Pittsburgh. Lauren Ashley, a professional organizer. Tim Browning, public works director for the City of Delaware. Jerry Geist, a member of Sustainable Delaware.Ohio Wesleyan faculty member and OWU Sustainability Task Force Chair Laurie Anderson will moderate the discussion.
“Sustainability is the new frontier,” says Wolber. “A new paradigm is needed. In partnership with Ohio Wesleyan University and other entities, Sustainable Delaware explores, articulates, and teaches new values and knowledge that will equip students with the necessary linguistic framework, practical competence, and moral character for service and leadership in a complex and increasingly global society.”
