Ohio Wesleyan University students will be hiking the Appalachian Train and exploring the Florida Everglades during OWU’s 2011 Spring Break Wilderness Treks.

The University Chaplain’s Office sponsors these annual trips, which provide students with opportunities for physical challenge, emotional growth, and spiritual engagement.

Associate Chaplain William Hayes encourages students to submit their applications by October 29 for either of the following treks:

Trail Magic: Community and Hospitality on the Appalachian Trail
Students will spend five days on the Appalachian Trail in the mountains of North Carolina looking at the ideas of community and hospitality while camping, walking, and living together in the woods. Participants will learn basic outdoor and backpacking skills and explore together their relationships with God, self, others, and creation. No experience is necessary.

Florida Everglades: 10,000 Islands
Students will spend seven days in the Ten Thousand Islands—a chain of mangrove islands off the coast of southwest Florida that is home to a variety of wildlife including dolphins, manatees, sea turtles and numerous wading birds. While canoeing and camping, participants will learn paddling and orienteering skills and develop leadership, decision-making, and responsibility, as well as discover more about their relationships with God, self, others, and creation. No experience is necessary.
