This FAQ provides detailed information about Ohio Wesleyan University's General Education Connection Experience (GenEd CX) requirement.

What is the OWU General Education Connection Experience (GenEd CX)?

The GenEd CX is a significant and sustained experiential learning activity that allows students to connect their academic knowledge with experiences outside the traditional classroom. It has been a required component of OWU's general education curriculum since 2023. The experience helps students integrate classroom learning with real-world applications, develop new skills, and prepare for their future careers.

Who needs to complete a GenEd CX?

Beginning with the incoming class of 2023, all OWU students must complete one Connection Experience to fulfill their general education requirements and graduate.

What are the different types of Connection Experiences?

There are four main categories of Connection Experiences:

  1. THINK BIG: Independent research and significant scholarly/creative projects
  2. DO GOOD: Meaningful community service and civic engagement activities
  3. GO GLOBAL: Off-campus programs (domestic and international) and international experiences
  4. GET REAL: Career preparation experiences like internships and externships

Each category offers multiple ways to fulfill the requirement based on your interests and goals.

What are the basic requirements for a GenEd CX?

All GenEd CXs must meet three basic criteria:

  1. Connect and extend content knowledge and skills gained in a disciplinary field of study
  2. Require the transfer and application of skills in a new context
  3. Involve significant and sustained activity and engagement outside of the traditional classroom

Additionally, students must meet at least four of six specific learning objectives outlined in the GenEd CX criteria.

What is the four-step process for completing a GenEd CX?

The process consists of:

  1. Planning & Approval: Submit a proposal describing your planned experience
  2. Execution: Participate in your approved experience and submit an update/preliminary reflection
  3. Reflection: Complete a detailed reflection on your experience
  4. Communication: Present your experience at a Connection Conference or other approved venue

Each step must be completed and approved before moving to the next. All forms can be accessed on the GenEd CX homepage.

How do I get my GenEd CX approved?

Submit a Planning & Approval form to the OWU Connection office, ideally in the semester prior to your planned experience. The form, which can be accessed on the GenEd CX homepage, includes a description of your proposed experience, relevant course connections, faculty and/or supervisor information, and estimated time commitment. The Connection office will review your proposal and either approve it or provide feedback for revision.

How many hours do I need to commit to my GenEd CX?

While there isn't a strict hour requirement, most experiences that satisfy the requirement typically involve a minimum of 20-30 hours of out-of-class activity. This includes time spent planning, researching, and executing the project or participating in the experience.

Can I complete my GenEd CX through a course?

Yes, certain courses include a GenEd CX as part of their requirements. These include independent studies (490-level courses), Travel-Learning Courses, and courses with significant out-of-classroom components like service learning (e.g., SJ 390 and SOAN 359). However, the experience must still be approved and meet all GenEd CX criteria. It is not enough to simply register for and complete the course.

What is the Connection Conference?

The Connection Conference is a biannual event (Fall and Spring) where students share their Connection Experiences with the OWU community and learn more about what kind of Connection Experiences are out there. It serves as the primary venue for fulfilling the communication requirement of the GenEd CX. Students can present their work through individual or group presentations, poster sessions, or other physical/digital artifacts.

What if I can't present at the Connection Conference?

If you cannot present at the Connection Conference, you may satisfy the communication requirement by presenting your work to a wide audience in another appropriate venue, such as the Spring Student Symposium, a professional conference or large meeting. You'll need to document this alternative presentation in your final submission.

How does the reflection component work?

The reflection process involves two parts:

  1. A preliminary reflection during your experience that describes the beginning of your CX and identifies challenges and connections to coursework
  2. A final reflection after completion that addresses specific prompts about your learning, course connections, skills developed, and future implications

Both reflections must be submitted using the appropriate forms and approved by the Connection office.

Can internships count as a GenEd CX?

Yes, internships can qualify as a GenEd CX under the GET REAL category, whether they are paid or unpaid, for credit or not for credit. However, the internship must still meet the basic criteria for a GenEd CX and go through the approval process.

What types of service learning activities qualify as a GenEd CX?

Under the DO GOOD category, qualifying service activities include:

  • Academic Service Learning courses
  • Service-oriented Theory-To-Practice Grants
  • Sustained direct service throughout a semester/year with training and reflection
  • Service-oriented internships/fellowships

The key is that the service must be sustained, meaningful, and connected to your academic learning.

Can study abroad count as a GenEd CX?

Yes, study abroad and other international experiences can qualify under the GO GLOBAL category. This includes semester programs, summer programs, travel-learning courses, and other international experiences. The experience must still meet the GenEd CX criteria and include appropriate reflection and presentation components.

Who reviews and approves GenEd CX proposals?

The OWU Connection directors review and approve GenEd CX proposals, with oversight from the Associate Dean of the OWU Connection and CAP (Committee on Academic Planning). Reviews occur on a rolling basis, with decisions typically made within two weeks of submission.

What happens if my GenEd CX proposal isn't approved?

If your proposal isn't approved, you'll receive feedback and suggestions for revision. You can then address these comments and resubmit your proposal. It's recommended to submit proposals well in advance of your planned experience to allow time for potential revisions.

How do I document my GenEd CX for graduation requirements?

Your GenEd CX completion is tracked through the four required forms:

  1. Planning & Approval form
  2. Update and Preliminary Reflection form
  3. Final Reflection form
  4. Communication Documentation form

As you complete each step, it will be recorded in your degree audit. All steps must be completed and approved for the requirement to be fulfilled.

Where can I get help planning my GenEd CX?

 Many resources are available:

  • The OWU Connection office staff
  • Your academic advisor
  • Connection office peer mentors
  • Faculty members in your field of study
  • The Director of Holistic Advising
  • Career Connection staff (for GET REAL experiences)
  • International & Off-Campus Programs office (for GO GLOBAL experiences)
  • Service Learning office (for DO GOOD experiences)
  • The Associate Dean of the OWU Connection (for THINK BIG experiences)

Can I complete more than one GenEd CX?

Yes! While only one GenEd CX is required for graduation, students are encouraged to participate in multiple Connection Experiences during their time at OWU. Each experience provides unique opportunities for learning and growth.

What if I complete my GenEd CX after graduation?

Some experiences, such as Travel-Learning Courses, may be completed after graduation. In such cases, students should contact the Connection Office to make alternative arrangements for completing the reflection and communication requirements. In general, however, students should complete their GenEd CX and the required reflections and communication before they graduate.

What's the difference between a regular Connection Experience and a GenEd CX?

While both are part of the OWU Connection program, a GenEd CX specifically satisfies the general education requirement and must meet additional criteria. GenEd CXs require formal approval, structured reflection, and public presentation components. They must also demonstrate clear connections to academic coursework and meet at least four of the six specified learning objectives.

How early in my academic career can I start my GenEd CX?

You can begin a GenEd CX at any point in your academic career. However, if you plan to complete your CX before taking related coursework, you'll need to schedule a meeting with OWU Connection staff to discuss how you'll connect the experience to future academic work. This is important because the experience must demonstrate integration with academic content, whether completed before or after related coursework.

What types of research projects qualify under the THINK BIG category?

Qualifying research projects include:

  • Independent study courses (490-level) in any department
  • Summer Science Research Program (SSRP) participation
  • Off-campus research experiences like NSF-REUs
  • Creative or scholarly projects that go beyond standard course requirements
  • Significant independent research with faculty mentorship

The key is that the research must be substantial, involve independent work, and connect to your academic studies.

How do I demonstrate the connection between my CX and my coursework?

You'll need to:

  1. Identify specific courses that relate to your CX
  2. List relevant learning objectives from those courses that your CX helps achieve
  3. Explain how assignments, concepts, or theories from the courses connect to your CX activities
  4. Describe how your CX enhanced your understanding of course materials
  5. Document these connections in both your preliminary and final reflections

This documentation should show clear, explicit links between your academic work and your experiential learning.

What role do faculty and staff mentors play in the GenEd CX process?

Mentors can:

  • Help you plan and develop your CX proposal
  • Provide guidance during the experience
  • Offer feedback on your reflections
  • Help you connect the experience to academic content
  • Support your preparation for the Connection Conference

You should identify relevant mentors in your initial proposal and maintain contact with them throughout your CX.

What happens if my GenEd CX plans change after approval?

If significant changes occur in your approved CX plans, you should:

  1. Contact the OWU Connection office immediately
  2. Document the changes and reasons for them
  3. Submit a revised proposal if necessary
  4. Wait for approval of the changes before proceeding

Minor adjustments may not require reapproval, but substantial changes to the scope, duration, or nature of the experience will need review.

How detailed should my CX reflections be?

Your reflections should be thorough and specific.

  • Preliminary reflection (~300 words): Describe the beginning of your experience and initial challenges/connections
  • Final reflection (~200 words per section): Address all required prompts, including:
    • Detailed description of your experience
    • Specific course connections and learning objectives
    • Skills developed
    • Challenges faced
    • Impact on future goals

Include concrete examples and specific instances that demonstrate your learning and growth.

Can I combine multiple experiences to fulfill my GenEd CX requirement?

While your GenEd CX should primarily be one cohesive experience, some experiences naturally combine multiple elements. However, you must clearly articulate how these elements work together to create a unified experience that meets all GenEd CX criteria in your proposal and reflections.

What resources are available to help fund my GenEd CX?

GenEd CX activities are supported in many different ways, including:

  • Theory-to-Practice Grants
  • Travel-Learning Course support
  • Summer Science Research Program funding
  • Connection Grants
  • Department-specific funds

Additionally, the Connection office can help you identify appropriate funding sources for your specific type of experience.

How is the GenEd CX different from a regular internship or volunteer experience?

While internships and volunteer work can qualify as GenEd CXs, they must include additional academic components:

  1. Pre-approval through formal proposal
  2. Clear connections to academic coursework
  3. Structured reflection during and after the experience
  4. Public presentation of learning outcomes
  5. Meeting at least four of the six GenEd CX learning objectives

Simply completing an internship or volunteer work without these additional components would not satisfy the GenEd CX requirement.
