Dr. Starns earned her bachelor's degree in Athletics Training from Manchester University, IN, her masters degree in Sport and Exercise from Gannon University, PA, and her doctorate in Administration and Leadership Studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, PA. Prior and during her degree obtaining years, she worked in various allied health areas (Prosthetics and Orthotics, High School Athletic Trainer, Phycisian Extender in Orthopedics, Coordinator of Sports Medicine). After obtaining her doctorate, she was tenured factulty at Gannon University for 6 years, teacing in their Applied Exercise Science and Athletic Training departments.
Now at OWU, Dr. Starns is excitied to return to a smaller, DIII, liberal arts institution, teaching courses in the Exercise Science concentration of the Health and Human Kinetics department. She resides in Delaware, OH with her wife, two sons, and numerous pets.
Research Focus:
While Dr. Starns has an allied health background, her research interests focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare, exercise and fitness industries. Specifically, her research aims to evaluate the inclusion of persons living with disabilities in fitness from curricular, programmatic, and accreditation viewpoints. She also has a research interest in the inclusion of BIPOC and women as Orthopedic surgery physicisians.
