OWU’s program emphasizes a solid theoretical base and practical experience. From the first course onward, you learn about the responsibilities and rewards of your profession by working directly with young adolescents in area middle schools. The Middle Childhood Major leads to a Middle Childhood License (Grades 4-9).

About the Major

The Middle Childhood Teacher Preparation Program develops the intellectual, personal, and professional competencies, skills, and dispositions necessary to teach students in grades 4-9 by requiring preservice teachers to successfully complete general liberal arts courses and professional education courses. To provide flexibility and further enhance the teacher's grasp of the interdisciplinary nature of knowledge, two areas of concentration are required. Such concentrated study complements the knowledge in general studies by providing a specialized understanding of two disciplines, allowing them to perceive how two particular bodies of knowledge are organized and conceptualized. Areas of concentration may be chosen from language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies.
