Chemistry Honorary
Chi Gamma Nu is a local honorary fraternity that was started in 1930 at Ohio Wesleyan. Chi Gamma Nu’s purpose is to honor those students who have shown a commitment to chemistry and a commitment to the classroom. Individuals inducted into Chi Gamma Nu have met and exceeded academic standards established both for the University and the Department.
Over the years Chi Gamma Nu members have made significant contributions to their fields. Many have completed Ph.D.s, become professors at other universities, become medical doctors, entered pharmacy school, and gone into industrial positions. Over the past 80 years more than 700 individuals have been inducted in this fraternity.
Student Assistantships
All Laboratory Assistant Positions
As a lab assistant at any level, you will be expected to attend your assigned laboratory section on time and prepared. You will be expected to circulate from student to student during the laboratory section, watching for appropriate technique and assisting students as needed. You will be expected to help make sure the laboratory is in good condition at the end of the meeting (all equipment properly shut down and put away). You will also be expected to provide whatever other lab-related assistance your instructor may require. If you accept this position, you must attend the department’s lab safety session at the beginning of the semester.
General Chemistry Homework Grader
This position requires that you correct homework assignments using a grading key provided by the course instructor. You will be responsible for assigning and recording homework grades as directed by the course instructor, and you will be responsible for returning the corrected homework assignments to the instructor in a timely manner.
General Chemistry Tutor
As a tutor, you will be expected to provide assistance to students experiencing difficulty with general chemistry homework or concepts. You will be expected to help improve student understanding. You will be expected to be present in the designated tutoring location during your assigned time slot and be prepared to answer student questions about relevant material.
Stockroom Lab Prep Assistant
This position requires that you help the stockroom manager with all aspects of preparing for laboratory meetings at all levels. You will be expected to physically prepare rooms (including moving some light equipment), prepare solutions and prepare unknowns. You will be expected to assist in proper waste disposal. If you accept this position, you attend the department’s lab safety session at the beginning of the semester.
Stockroom Inventory Assistant
This position requires that you assist the stockroom manager in checking and maintaining inventory lists for chemicals. You will be required to use Microsoft Excel to track inventory changes. If you accept this position, you must attend the department’s lab safety session at the beginning of the semester.
