The national bird, the Palmchat, Cigua Palmera in Spanish, is endemic to Hispaniola and known for building communal nests high in the palm trees. The Palmchat illustration symbolizes the importance of community in Dominican culture.
Also represented is the Taino Sun God symbol. The Taino are indigenous people of the Caribbean and were the original settlers of the Dominican Republic before European Settlers, and their Lineage remains to this day. Anacoana was a poet, composer, and one of the leaders of the Taino tribe when European settlers arrived. Her name, which translates to "Golden Flower" is represented in the design with a series of Chrysanthemums, also referred to as "the golden flowers."
