Cheyenne Nation Identity
This portrait represents a Native American of the Cheyenne Nation located in the Great Plains.
The diamond-shaped pattern is repeated throughout the design, in the background and overlapping with the individual. This pattern is representative of the 'Morning Star' symbol of the Northern Cheyenne Nation. This design is seen prominently on the Cheyenne flag and signifies the future survival of the Cheyenne people. The illustration position grows vibrant and colorful when overlapping with the individual to emphasize the importance of this celebrating identity and how identity is woven into individualism.
The Cheyenne were originally a sedentary Nation but were forced to become more nomadic due to white settlement, where they began to follow the buffalo. In Cheyenne culture, the buffalo represents provision for survival, and this theme is figured into the background design, as well as on the subject's shirt.
Similarly, the great majestic Wandering Albatross bird is known for being nomadic, and it is figured throughout the design as well. The Cheyenne circular 4-arrow medicine symbol is represented on the left side.
